Helsinki
is the capital of Finland, which became independent
in 1917, after being ruled for centuries by Sweden and
then by Russia. Among the Nordic countries, Finland
has the longest border with Russia. Helsinki has a small
population, yet it is rich in gay culture. The city
is surrounded on three sides by water and has many museums
and attractions. One of the most popular tourist spots
is the Suomenlinna fortress, a short ferry ride from
the busy open Market Square. The fortress is included
on UNESCO’s world heritage list.
